file2markdown is a free online tool that converts documents into clean, structured Markdown. Whether you are working with PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, presentations, or a dozen other formats, file2markdown extracts the content and gives you Markdown you can actually use.

Under the hood, file2markdown is powered by Microsoft MarkItDown (MIT License), an open-source library built to handle real-world document conversion at scale.

What we support

Over 15 formats including PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, HTML, EPUB, CSV, JSON, XML, JPG, PNG, and more. We are constantly adding support for new formats.

Privacy first

Your files are processed transiently and deleted immediately after conversion — we never keep them. Images and scanned PDFs are OCR'd via Anthropic's Claude API; see our privacy policy for details. We do not retain or share your content.
