File processing

Files you upload to file2markdown are processed transiently. Some conversions (PDF and Office documents) briefly write your file to a temporary directory on our conversion server; these temporary files are deleted immediately after the conversion finishes, whether it succeeds or fails. We never store your files after conversion, and we do not retain, analyze for our own purposes, or share the content of your files.

OCR for images and scanned PDFs

When you convert an image (JPG, PNG) or a scanned PDF with no text layer, the image content is sent to Anthropic's Claude API to extract the text. This and the optional AI quality check below are the only cases where document content leaves our servers. The OCR step is subject to Anthropic's privacy policy. Anthropic does not use API data to train its models by default. If you prefer that your content never reaches a third-party API, convert only documents that already contain a text layer and leave the AI quality check off.

Optional AI quality check

When you tick “Also run an AI quality check” on the convert page, or pass quality_check="ai" to our API or MCP server, selected excerpts of the converted Markdown are sent to TypeSafe AI (typesafe.ai) to answer narrow yes/no questions about the output: whether text looks garbled, whether sentences are split across lines, and whether tables look broken. Your original file is never sent, the excerpts are the converted text only, and TypeSafe returns probabilities, not text. This check is off by default and never runs unless you request it. Basic checks that run on every conversion happen entirely on our own servers. TypeSafe's handling of API data is described in its privacy policy and data processing agreement; TypeSafe states it does not train on customer API data.

Email addresses

If you subscribe to our newsletter or create an account, we store your email address to provide the service. You can unsubscribe at any time. We do not sell or share your email with third parties.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how people use the site (e.g., page views, conversion counts, feature usage). We do not use fingerprinting or sell data to advertisers, and file contents are never sent to analytics. When you arrive from a Microsoft ad, we retain its click identifier and campaign details in your browser for up to 30 days of attribution eligibility. If you subscribe, these details accompany your Stripe checkout. We may report the click identifier, purchase time, value and currency to Microsoft Advertising to measure ad performance. We do not send file contents with these reports.

If you opt in through Ad privacy, Microsoft Advertising receives page visits, successful conversion events and checkout-start events, together with browser and device information, to measure advertising. Microsoft also uses this data for its own advertising and service improvement purposes. The website tag only loads after you allow it. See the Microsoft Privacy Statement. This website measurement does not send document contents or file names.

Cookies

We use essential cookies to keep the site functional (e.g., session management). If you allow Microsoft ad measurement, Microsoft Advertising can use advertising cookies. You can decline or withdraw permission using the Ad privacy button on any page. We use first-party browser storage for signup source and Microsoft ad attribution. You can remove it by clearing this site’s browser data.

Data security

All connections to file2markdown are encrypted via HTTPS. We follow industry-standard practices to protect your data in transit.
