EPUB to Markdown: Convert Ebooks for Notes and AI Workflows

An EPUB is convenient for reading, but sometimes you want to work with its text: make chapter notes, compare passages or prepare reference material for an AI tool. Converting it to Markdown gives you a version you can open and edit with text tools.

EPUB is an open format rather than a picture of each page. Books can still organize their chapters, notes and assets differently, which affects the conversion result.

What to Expect from the Output

Headings, paragraphs, lists and links can be represented in Markdown. Check that chapter headings appear in the right places and that chapters follow the EPUB's reading order.

The visual design will not be identical. Fonts, margins, colors and interactive elements do not have complete equivalents in Markdown. Images may appear as references to assets; a single .md file does not automatically include all those assets.

Pay particular attention to footnotes, internal links, tables and heavily illustrated books. Keep the original EPUB when those elements are needed to understand the content.

Organize the Book in Obsidian or an Editor

You can start with one complete file, then split it by chapter. Retain the book title, author and chapter heading in each note so its origin remains clear outside the original folder.

Distinguish your observations from source passages. After splitting the file, test links to other chapters: changed headings or filenames can change where they lead.

Use the Text with an AI Tool

For a long book, start with a chapter and request references to its sections. A tool accepting an upload does not prove that the model received or processed the entire book.

Keep tables, units and notes together. If a question depends on an illustration, consult the EPUB or supply the image to a compatible tool. Markdown does not replace visual information or guarantee correct answers.

A Local Alternative with Pandoc

With Pandoc installed, you can use:

pandoc book.epub -f epub -t gfm -o book.md

This produces GitHub-flavored Markdown. Check chapters and links. Saving images requires separate asset extraction; consult Pandoc's media options if you need those files.

Privacy and Final Checks

file2markdown converts files in memory and does not store them. The privacy policy describes the service. Basic checks accompany the result; the optional Jev check is for PDFs and does not apply to EPUB.

Before using the converted book, check that the end of its final chapter is present. A well-extracted introduction does not establish that every later section converted completely.

Can I convert a DRM-protected ebook?
